The McPhail’s Furniture Story
In 1969, Keith McPhail married Bev Kensington. Keith from Yarrawonga and Bev from Wangaratta. They settled in Wangaratta and bought a carrying and furniture removal business based beside the Wangaratta Railway Station and opposite the North Eastern Hotel. Through the furniture removals Keith was often left with surplus furniture. With his auctioneering background (he was previously a stock agent) he and Bev purchased the old Peters Ice Cream warehouse at the current location of the Wangaratta store. At this site they auctioned used furniture monthly. This side venture became bigger and more successful than the removal business and the decision to sell and open McPhail’s Antiques and Used Furniture was completed in 1975. The new business grew steadily over the next 20 years with the addition of new furniture. Son, Casey, joined Keith and Bev in the business in 1995 and sadly in 1997 Keith suddenly passed away. At this difficult time Jason joined Bev and Casey to help out and by 2005 he had expanded the business into Wodonga. McPhail’s Wodonga originally operated at Watson Street opposite the Wodonga Plaza. In 2007 Bev handed the reigns over to the two boys who shifted the business to direct purchasing internationally. Casey decided to expand further and opened McPhail’s Shepparton in 2009 as the business continued to grow.
In 2014 youngest brother Taylor joined the boys, bringing a new enthusiasm to rebrand and take the business online. In 2015 Taylor took over from Jason and currently Taylor and Casey own and operate the family business.
Casey and Taylor have been continuously renovating and enhancing the Wangaratta location, transforming it from a shed into a beautifully presented showroom. As their business gained a massive online following and with the introduction of the $59 flat-rate delivery fee servicing Victoria, NSW, ACT, South East SA (including Adelaide), and South East QLD (including Brisbane), the brothers made a strategic decision to focus on expanding their online presence and centralizing their operations into a single, flagship showroom in Wangaratta.
